Taking a long vacation isn’t always possible. With limited vacation time it can be hard to take long trips frequently for most Americans. Thankfully, with the right credit cards you can still save on staycations in your hometown or nearby areas.
Many cards offer a free nights and perks just for having the card. Let’s look at a few that can help you save on a staycation so you can still get out but without burning large chunks of vacation time.
Free Hotel Nights
In addition to points you earn from daily spend, many hotel credit cards come with free night certificates that you can use to help save on staycations.
You can earn free night certificates from a variety of credit cards. Here is a snapshot of what some cards have offered in the past:
- Hilton Honors Surpass by American Express – free weekend night after $15,000 in spend
- Chase Marriott Premier – free night on each cardmember anniversary
- Chase IHG Premier Credit Card – free night on each cardmember anniversary
- Chase Hyatt Visa Credit Card – free night on each cardmember anniversary
Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Credit
One of my favorite credit cards is the Chase Sapphire Reserve. It comes with a $300 travel credit for every cardmember anniversary.
This credit is very flexible – you can use it to pay for flights or to book a hotel room. With this travel credit, you can easily save on staycations by using it to pay for more boutique hotels or airbnbs. This gives a lot of flexibility in addition to free nights you can earn from hotel co-branded credit cards.
Free Museum Entry
You can save on staycations by saving on activities as well. An often under-mentioned perk of Bank of America credit cards is the Museums on Us.
Museums on Us grants free entry to certain museums on the first weekend of every month. You do have to be a cardholder, and it doesn’t extend to family members, but there is an easy workaround. Just make your family members an authorized user on your card. They’ll then have cards in their name and they can get free museum entry.
If you are trying to save on staycations in a big city, this can help you save even more money by providing fun and educational activities without pinching the pocketbook.
