If you’re just getting into the free travel movement, the number of cards that could get you to your goals may seem pretty overwhelming. We have a number of cards that we stand by when it comes to which card is best for beginner free travelers, and one of them is the Capital One Venture card.
To keep it plain and simple, the key to picking the right card is to see which offers you the best value towards your spending habits, travel preferences, and your travel goals. So with the recent updates that Capital One has made in terms of benefits for its card members, the Capital One Venture card is slowly gaining momentum as a preferred card for free travel, and here are some of the reasons why:
A Great Welcome Offer
When you sign up with the Capital One Venture Card, you get a lot of value right off the bat. First, your annual fee of $95 is waived in the first year, which means, you get to try out the card for a full year at zero cost.
Another thing we love about the Capital One Venture card is the generous sign-up bonus that comes with it: 50,000 miles after spending $3,000 on your first three months. At a redemption value of 1 cent per mile, this easily converts to a $500 value.
The Earning Potential
Unlike other cards with different earning structures, the Capital One Venture Card is very straightforward. There are no categorizations for earning points or miles, it’s simply this: 2x miles per dollar spent. This translates to a powerful earning potential on all your purchases (not just travel and dining purchases, but ALL purchases). This puts the Capital One Venture Card as a great card for your everyday use.
In addition to this, Capital One’s partnership with Hotels.com gives you the chance to earn 10x miles for every dollar. This offer is good up to January 2020, so it’s a great time to take advantage of this while you can. Also note that when you book with Hotels.com, you can also take advantage of their 10% cash back offer. This means that whenever you book a stay using Hotels.com using your Capital One Venture card, not only do you get more miles, you get a total of 20% back in your hotel spend!
Redemption with your Capital One Venture Card is also straightforward at 1:1, that is 1 cent per 1 mile.
Capital One also features a “Purchase Eraser” that you can use to offset any travel expenses you’ve made through your card. This means that you can use your card practically anywhere – with any airline or any hotel. You don’t have to worry about booking with limited travel options, you can use your miles on anything that counts as travel – Airbnb bookings, experiences, cruises and more. But, you do have only up to 90 days from the date of your purchase to use this feature. Learn more about the Purchase Eraser feature here.
In addition, with the announcement of 15 transfer partners for their miles, you can now transfer your miles to a range of different airlines. The ratios for transfer differ from partner to partner, but most notably, you can transfer at a 2:1.5 ratio for certain airlines. The table below gives you a complete overview of the transfer partners and the transfer ratios for the Capital One Venture Card:

Great for International Travel
One of the dreaded charges for out of the country travel is the 3-5% additional charge placed on your card. This is why many would prefer to just bring cash instead of using their cards, missing out on the valuable points they could earn through their cards. By eliminating foreign transaction fees, the Capital One Venture Card is easily a great partner for international travel.
A Handful of Additional Perks
Although Premium Cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve, are the more popular choice in terms of perks and benefits, the Capital One Venture card also offers a handful of perks for its members.
For starters, the Capital One Venture Card can cover up to $250,000 in travel insurance. It also offers luggage protection of up to $3,000 as well as a rental car collision damage coverage. You can also enjoy a range of travel assistance services, including emergency legal, medical assistance, and 24/7 roadside assistance (subject to a flat rate of $59).
Shopping protection and guarantees are also included for certain purchases. For instance, if you purchase a covered item through your Capital One Venture card and the manufacturer offers a 2-year warranty, you get double the warranty period – so a total of 4 years. When you also purchase a covered item that results in theft or damage, you can claim replacement to up to $500.
Although the Capital One Venture Card is not the go-to card for luxury travel perks, it offers a solid reward potential for first time free travelers. The fact that the card offers flexible redemption options, coupled with a powerful earning potential (2x miles for ALL PURCHASES!), the possibilities with the card are endless. You can get great value with this card, not to mention that you get to try it at no cost for the first year, making it a zero dollar investment for you to start with.
